A student portfolio is a powerful tool for documenting academic and personal growth throughout a student’s educational journey. It provides concrete evidence of their learning achievements, skills development, and reflections, helping students track their progress and showcase their capabilities. Creating a student portfolio encourages students to think critically, reflect on their learning experiences, and present their work with precision and sophistication. These tools are increasingly important for academic progression, job searches, and personal development.
An electronic portfolio (e-portfolio) or a digital portfolio is a purposeful collection of sample student work, demonstrations, and artifacts that showcase a student’s learning progression, achievement, and evidence of what they can do. Digital portfolios have the potential to revolutionize the teaching and learning process by capturing each student’s capabilities in ways that standardized tests or end-of-course summative exams simply cannot.
This webinar is designed to support faculty members and teaching staff in integrating the use of digital portfolios into their teaching and learning practices. Participants will gain the foundational knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to effectively implement digital portfolios. The emphasis will be on using digitally enabled portfolios rather than paper- based ones, though both approaches will be highlighted.
During the webinar, participants will take an in-depth look at the benefits of using digital portfolios, their different types, and their uses in teaching and learning. They will discuss the main components of a portfolio and the process of assembling one using suitable technology platforms. Participants will also learn how to guide students in selecting sources of evidence (artifacts), structuring their digital portfolios, reflecting on their artifacts, and regularly reviewing and maintaining their portfolios.
By the end of the webinar participants will:
Comprehend the benefits of using digital portfolios in teaching and learning to showcase
student learning and demonstrate growth over time.
Identify the different types of student portfolios and their use in teaching and learning.
Make informed decisions about the structure, components, types of evidence, and reflections required for student digital portfolios.
Explore a variety of software tools for the creation of digital portfolios.
Utilize portfolios as a means of alternative assessment.
Plan the integration of digital portfolios into their courses.
