Chrissie Boughey holds positions as an Emeritus Professor at Rhodes University and as Professor Extraordinaire at Stellenbosch University, two leading ‘research intensive’ universities in South Africa. Previously, she served as Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs at Rhodes University.

She holds a DPhil degree in Applied Linguistics and two master’s degrees, one in English Language and Literature and another in Applied Linguistics. In her academic career, she has researched and published extensively taking a critical stance in relation to higher education. In 2021 she published a book with colleague Professor Sioux McKenna entitled ‘Understanding Higher Education: Alternative Perspectives’ which has received 149 citations since its publication in 2021. Her latest book entitled ‘The Language Story’ is about to be published.

Prof Boughey is internationally recognised as a researcher serving on the editorial boards of Quartile 1 journals Teaching in Higher Education, Arts and Humanities in Higher Education and Q2 journal the International Journal of Academic Development. She is also a commissioning editor for Higher Education another Q1 ranked journal published by Springer.

She has supervised extensively at doctoral level and examines widely. Her most recent doctoral examination was for Oxford University. Since 2010 she has received more than EUR 4million worth of funding from the European Union for work on developing doctoral education in Africa.
