Online Workshop Overview

In today’s higher education landscape, faculty are increasingly required to go beyond content delivery and play a critical role in supporting student engagement, wellbeing,
and success. Adopting a coaching approach enables faculty to empower students to think independently, take ownership of their learning, and develop the skills needed to thrive academically and professionally.

A coaching approach shifts the dynamic from telling to asking, from directing to facilitating, and from solving problems to developing student capability. By creating space for reflection, using active listening, and asking powerful questions, faculty can help students build confidence, resilience, and self-regulation.

This interactive online workshop introduces faculty to the coaching mindset and core coaching skills, and provides a practical framework (GROW) for structuring meaningful student conversations. Participants will explore the differences between teaching, mentoring, and coaching, and learn how to apply a coaching approach in real academic contexts such as office hours, advising, and feedback conversations.

This workshop is designed to include a dynamic mix of interactive activities, breakout discussions, live demonstrations, and coaching practice in triads, ensuring that participants not only understand coaching but also experience and apply it.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of the coaching role in higher education, develop practical coaching skills, and build confidence in facilitating student-centred conversations that enhance engagement, ownership, and success.
